Setting up an online business is a great idea because you don't need a location, just a few tools are enough, and therefore the initial investment is very small. But, obviously, it is not enough to decide that you want to create your own online store, you also need to find a product that suits you and may have a niche in the market. If you want answers to the question What can I sell on the Internet? You don't have one idea here, but seven.
Before going to the list of seven things you could sell online, I would like to remind you of some important points for anyone starting a business:
Go for a product that you know well.
Better to sell your own product than to market someone else's (you will have more margin).
Try to answer the questions to make a business plan, they will be very useful.
Choose a sector that you like, you will spend many hours dedicating yourself to it.
Find a booming market
If you ask yourself "What can I sell online?", It is probably a good idea to go looking for products that are having the most demand in recent years. If you have doubts about how to find out, you can do a combined search between Google Adwords (to know the traffic of each keyword) and Google Trends, to see if the traffic is growing in recent years.
This is precisely what I did with these seven examples. They are all products with growing demand, or at least a growing curiosity on the part of potential buyers, reflected by their searches on the Internet. All those keywords have at least 1,000 monthly visits in California.
I have included the Google Trend evolution charts. Sometimes they can take time to load. If after 30 seconds, some seem not to load, I invite you to refresh the page. I have preferred to link directly to Google so that you have an article with information always up to date.
If you are using the AMP version of the article (which Google will load by default if you found this article through the search engine from your mobile), the graphics will not appear. To view them, simply click on the link to the original format of the article (at the top of your screen, where there is an "i" for information).
Have you thought about making your own handmade product?
The best way to make a lot of margin on a product is to make it yourself, and then sell it on platforms like Etsy or on your own blog or online store. Here are three examples.
Among the main fashion accessories, it seems that earrings have a very good sales trend. As it is a relatively easy product to produce (for someone with talent), and there are many materials available at very competitive prices, you could get a very interesting margin. In addition, the earrings take up little space and weigh little, so the issue of transport is much cheaper (you can practically send them by normal mail). In short: a good plan to sell on the Internet. Take a look at the trend in recent years.
Stuff for babies
There are businesses that do not seem to go out of style. Even when the birth rate declines, which has happened in Spain since the beginning of the economic crisis, baby products continue to be a very positive bet. Or so it seems when we are interested in the keywords "things for babies." Nothing prevents you from launching into making fashion, toys or other accessories for the little ones, as long as you are careful to make a safe and reliable product.
In this case, it is noted that the positive trend up to 2015 seems to have partially reversed. Still, the market for baby products is huge, and it's still interesting if you wonder what you can sell online.
Yes, you read that correctly, there is a specific market for cat toys, and the search trend associated with this keyword shows sustained growth. We are not just talking about the typical fake mouse for the feline to play for a while. There are many more elaborate things. Recently, I was shown a cat nail product that is shaped like a turntable, so that when the cat uses it, it looks like it is playing like a DJ. Again, this market is totally suitable for someone with talent and creativity, designing and manufacturing their own products, to then sell them online.
The interest in cat toys continues to grow year after year. It seems like an interesting niche for online entrepreneurs.
What to sell online? The training business
Are you an expert in something? Why don't you turn this knowledge into a business? All you have to do is design a method to convey what you know to those who want to learn it. And the good thing is that you can create totally digital products, so the cost is minimal, and the distribution is totally free. All of that means more scope for you.
Let's go to the general trend. As you can see from the graph, interest in online training is growing. If you think you have knowledge that you can transfer in a digital format (video, electronic book), you may have a very good product to sell on the Internet.
In this case, it seems that interest in online training has slowed down a bit, although the decline has been moderate. It is probably due to the drop in unemployment and economic recovery. Many times, people interested in taking online courses are unemployed and seek to expand their employment possibilities.
Two other products with a positive trend that you can sell online
To finish this article, I wanted to present you two other proposals, based on articles that have been very successful in recent years, at least if you look at Google Trends searches.
Cheap running shoes
It seems that more and more people are worried about their health and well-being, and many have switched to the sports lifestyle. I can tell you that here, in Valencia, it is impressive to see the number of corridors that there are along the old Turia riverbed, especially in the afternoons. But since doing sports does not necessarily mean spending a lot of money, it seems that many people look for cheap shoes. Even having a specialized online store could be worth it, or more generally, selling running products and accessories online.
Here we are facing another example of how interest in a product or service varies enormously depending on the economic context and fashions. I don't think the interest in running has waned, but the recovery in the economy probably means that people are not going as much for cheap products as they did a few years ago.
I do not know if the percentage of people intolerant to gluten (celiacs) is growing, if only many people with this problem are realizing it, or if there is a fashionable phenomenon around the issue that makes people prefer to avoid gluten just in case. But it is clear that the demand for gluten-free products is growing. This could be used with an online store that sells food for celiacs, or specialized recipe books, or any other idea you may have on this subject.
In this case, I think that the change in trend is due more to the greater offer of gluten-free products on the market than to less interest from people. If today supermarket products are marked "gluten-free", it is less necessary to inquire about the Internet.
I hope you liked those ideas. As always, my purpose is not that you start them as is, but that they help you in your reflection on how to start an online business with more guarantees of success.
