We think that as you gain experience in business life, CV preparation will be easier, but preparing a CV is still a difficult issue. CV should be rearranged according to the company applied for and the position applied for. Even when you apply to a company abroad, you need to make changes to your CV.
As such, many basic elements that should and should not be in an ideal CV can be determined. In this article, we have listed the do's and don'ts for a successful CV.
1. Emphasize Your Most Relevant Experiences
You have a basic CV that you have prepared. You should make small adjustments to this CV for each different job you apply. Maybe you just graduated from university, maybe you are making career and sector changes. If you do not have one-on-one experience with the job you are applying for, you do not have to worry. Consider how you can transfer your current knowledge and skills to the job you are applying for. In other words, consider your entire education, internship and business life and highlight the features that best suit the job applied for.
3. Don't Copy The Statements In The Job Posting
There are classic expressions in job postings.
"Analytical thinking, open to innovation ..."
In the section where you briefly introduce yourself in your CV, "I am someone who can think analytically and is open to innovation." Don't use an expression like.
Instead, add programs that you are familiar with, that you can improve with a little more work, next to computer programs that you can use, for example, at a professional level. In other words, instead of copying the statements in the job posting, say in a more precise language that you meet the requirements in the advertisement.
4. Don't Place Confidential Information
Google Human Resources Manager states that CVs contain highly confidential and private information. At this point, you can develop the following logic: If it would be a problem for you to include the information in your CV on the front page of a newspaper, do not include private and confidential information in your CV. For example, your home address is never required to be on your CV.
5. Incorporate Your Social Skills
You may have 15 years of experience in management, but you need to show this through what you do, not verbally.
“I established a coaching program for the company consisting of 100 staff and I was the coordinator of this program for 3 years. During this period, I matched 30 employees with experienced names in the company. As a result, the rate of turnover of new employees in the company has decreased by 45% within 3 years. "
Such a statement will very well show what your 15 years of experience is capable of.
6. Do not Dive into Controversial Topics
So you may have volunteered for an LGBT association, or worked in a political party youth branch. It would be better not to include your experiences on such controversial issues in your CV that you submit to a classic company. However, if the job you are applying for is closely related to these issues, you can include it in your resume.
7. Talk about your personal accomplishments
You can include your personal achievements, which have a special place in your life, on your CV. For example, if you came first in the Eurasia Marathon in 2011, you can indicate this on your CV. Because such an experience shows that you are a free-spirited, disciplined person who has work ethics and loves to push the boundaries. Or if you have significant success in subjects such as sports, art, and science, be sure to mention them.
In addition, it does not make much sense to include things you love at the hobby level. If you regularly play basketball and become a member of the book club, if it is not directly related to the features in the job advertisement, it is possible even if it is not included in the CV. Or your McDonalds where you worked part-time during your high school years, etc. You do not need to specify it in your CV. We can even say: Do not mention anything about your high school years on your CV. You can write this if you graduated from a prestigious high school.
8. Visualize the CV
Recently, various programs have been released to create infographic, data visualization, animation style CVs. If the company and position you apply for is open to such an approach, you can prepare an infographic-style CV. However, if you are applying to a corporate company, it would be better to adopt the classic CV style we know.
9. Don't Go Over A Page
Dozens of CVs come to human resources departments every day. We can say that the situation is even worse in our country where unemployment is high. So show your CV to be as short and to the point as possible. A one-page CV is fine. Laszlo Bock, former director of human resources at Google, states that a 1-page CV will be enough for 10 years of work experience.
10. Avoid the Crowd
So don't try to overwrite everything to fit your CV on a single page. Try to keep your CV clean and simple. Do not try to reduce the font size and fill in a single sheet of A4 throughout. Make a CV that is readable, with enough white space, reflecting the most important information.
11. Specify Your Contact Information
You cannot imagine the number of CVs without a phone or e-mail address. People leave CVs to companies, but they forget to add their contact information to the CV anyway so that human resources can return to this person.
Don't you guys do that.
Include information such as telephone, e-mail address, website, URL for your portfolio, if any, the city and country you live in on your CV. You do not need to add the full address, ie the residence address, to the CV.
By the way, let's say, use your personal e-mail address on your CV, not the e-mail address of the company you currently work for. Then things can get mixed up.
12. Mention Your Promotions
You may have worked in a company for 5 years. But it may also be good to mention the different jobs you have undertaken within this company. So if you have experienced a change of position or department within the company, it would be good to state this situation. Something like this shows the variety of experience, after all.
13. Use Summary in Introduction
You can give perspective to the people who read the CV by mentioning your skills and experiences in a few sentences at the beginning of the CV. In other words, you can summarize where you are in business life, how your knowledge and skills lead you, what makes you special, in a few sentences, and then move on to the elements of education, skills and experience.
14. Don't Try To Close Gaps
Do not try to cover up your few months or years of unemployment. If you could not find a job or worked between 2015-2017, you can talk about what you did during these dates. In a period of 2 years, in any case, people have learned and experienced new things. In this regard, do not be ashamed of the gaps in your business life, do not try to hide them.
15.Avoid Spelling Error
Spelling means English. A person who cannot use his / her native language properly will have a low professional awareness. Therefore, after preparing a CV, have people who trust their English and grammar against spelling and punctuation errors read this CV. Have it checked for errors.
At this point, let's mention one more thing about language and style. Take care to make constructive and positive sentences.
For example, "I eliminated the financial efficiency problem of the company with a new accounting program I used in the field of finance." Instead of a sentence like "I increased the financial efficiency of the company." A sentence like it would be more accurate. So instead of removing a negative situation, state that you are creating a positive situation. Use a constructive, positive tone instead of negative and destructive sentences.
