The Importance of Communication Skills on the Path to Success - Warren Buffett
Warren Buffett: Only by developing this skill can you make a big difference to your future earnings! Warren Buffett's views on being successful.
We have written many articles on the views of the investment veteran Warren Buffett before. This time, however, we decided to change our focus a little bit and address Buffett's ideas and advice on communication skills rather than investment tactics.
According to Buffett, one of the world's most famous billionaires, if you want to advance in your career, you always need to improve your communication skills. Famous Canadian author Gillian Zoe Segal had an interview with Buffett while writing her book "Getting There: A Book of Mentors", which has not yet been translated into Turkish, and when the communication topic was raised, she received the following reply:
"The communication in question is that if you improve yourself just a little bit, you can significantly increase your future monetization power."
In addition, Buffett again highlighted the topic of communication in a video posted on LinkedIn last year, arguing that people who pushed themselves and made progress in this field could increase their commercial value by at least 50%.
You ask why? The answer is actually simpler than you think: What you need to do to earn money and rise in the business world is to be able to drag others after you. If you work as a salesperson in any company, you want your colleagues to listen to you and act by taking your advice into consideration. If you are a senior manager, it is not enough for those around you to just listen to you; you need to get them to act and follow your footsteps.
We have been emphasizing Buffett's importance to communication from the beginning of our article. However, it is necessary to state that he did not come out of his mother's womb as a communication guru, either. In fact, Warren Buffett honestly admits that when he was young, he had a great deal of difficulty communicating with people:
“Until I was 20, I didn't even dare to open my mouth in public! At that time, the idea of going out and talking in a world of people was making me sick. "
But Buffett, an intelligent and self-critical person, was well aware of the problem.
While studying at Columbia University's School of Business, he decided to take action and paid $ 100 to enroll in the human influence and oratory course opened by Dale Carnegie, one of the greatest orators in the USA.
During the two-month course, there was one lesson each week. Buffett, who attended all the lessons, continued his oratory studies after the end of the course. While talking about his memories, he does not miss the following sentences on this subject:
"As soon as the course was over, I went to Omaha University and asked," Would you let me teach here? " “Because I knew like a step that I would lose all my progress if I did not come across people as soon as possible and apply what I learned. So, working diligently, I continued to speak in public. Now I've come to such a point that I don't know how to be quiet! "
Buffett, now 89, thinks that the course he attended by paying $ 100 on time was one of the best investments he made in his life. The famous businessman, who could not finish praising the course in question, continues his words as follows:
“The effect of the oratory course on me was really enormous. It was definitely the best diploma I have ever received in my life, because the valuable knowledge I learned in the course was at the heart of my career success. "
When you go to Buffett's office today, you cannot see the diplomas he received from prestigious universities such as Nebraska or Columbia. But his oratory course graduation certificate from the Dale Carnegie Institute appears in the most prominent part of the room.
We have come to the end of another short article. We hope you will take Warren Buffettin's advice and opinions into consideration and take the necessary steps to improve your communication with people. We wish everybody success!
