Motivation is a powerful but problematic concept. Sometimes it's so easy to get motivated and find yourself in a thrill storm! Sometimes it is normal that you do not understand how to be motivated and fall into the trap of procrastinating one by one.
Motivation: What is it and how does it work?
Scientists define motivation as a desire to do something. Motivation, in short, is the set of psychological factors that push you to "do". This definition is sufficient, of course, but I think we can find a slightly more useful definition.
So what exactly is this motivation? There is a sentence in author Steven Pressfield's book "The War of Art" that I think has reached the core of motivation. To quote, "At some point, the pain of not doing that job is more than the pain of doing it."
So it's easier to change at some point than to get stuck in the same situation. It's easier to get up from your bed and feel insecure at the gym than to sit still on the sofa all day and hate yourself. It's easier to feel awkward when looking for customers to sell than to look at their bank account and be disappointed.
We think this is the basis of motivation. Every choice has a price, but the trouble of doing that job when our motivation is high is less than the cost of not doing it. Usually after weeks of laziness, we pass a mental threshold, thanks to the upcoming deadlines, and the trouble of not doing those piling up jobs is taking the trouble to do the job.
Common misconceptions about motivation
One of the most surprising things about the concept of motivation is that motivation does not come after starting an action, but rather after the opposite. Almost everyone has the misconception that motivation can be achieved by watching motivational videos and reading inspirational books, but actually one source of inspiration that is constantly active is from self-help books and "Come on!" It can be a much more powerful source of motivation than the speakers who say.
Motivation is the result of a general act, not the reason for the beginning. Regardless, starting a business is an example of active inspiration that naturally creates momentum.
Experts prefer to call it the "Physics of Productivity" because in fact this is exactly what Newton's first law is adapted to the science of behavior: Objects in motion tend to stay in motion. It's always easier to continue once you get to work.
Actually, you don't need equal motivation to continue a job after you start. The difficulty of a job is usually to get yourself at the table from the very beginning. Usually, after you start, your progress will come naturally. So starting is half the time to finish, the proverb actually points to a very rightful point.
So one of the keys to being motivated is to make it easier to get started.
How to be motivated and started?
Many people find it difficult to find the motivation they need to achieve their goals because they have invested so much time and energy in other parts of the process. If you want to be motivated and easy to get started, it may be helpful to turn the first parts of your behavior chart into a routine.
Plan Your Motivation: During a conversation about writing, Pelin, one of my friends, looked at me and said, "Many people are not interested in writing because they constantly wonder when they will write again." said. The same goes for exercising, starting a business and many other habits. Think of it like this, you gave up on what you thought you could start thinking about that you could not continue?
For example, if you don't have a regular exercise watch every day, when you wake up every morning you might think, "I hope I will be energetic enough to go to the gym today."
If your company does not have a system used for marketing, you will expect a genius idea to come to your mind for the new product promotion plan your managers expect, apart from all the other work you need to do every time you go to work.
If you don't have a weekly time frame to write something, you will find yourself saying things like "I just need my will to do this, come on, I can".
An article in The Guardian sums up the situation: "If you spend your resources deciding where and when to work, you will actually only reduce your working capacity."
Even though it seems simple to plan for yourself, it actually gives you a certain time and space to automate your decision-making processes and achieve your goals. Making a plan and drawing a path increases your likelihood of keeping up with the plan, even if your motivation is low. You have to stop waiting for motivation or inspiration to come to you, and start planning for your habits. This is exactly the difference between professionals and amateurs. Professionals prepare and adapt a plan before they hit the road. Amateurs, on the other hand, prefer to wait for their muse to set out.
Great artists' work depends on a fixed routine rather than motivation or muse. So how can you be motivated using ritual and routine technique? There are some simple steps you can take:
Exercise more often: Always use the same movements for warm-up movements.
Be more creative: Before you start writing, drawing or singing, do a ritual that will unleash your creativity.
Start each day stress-free: Get a five-minute meditation routine that you can do when you wake up in the morning.
Sleep better: Practice a routine that prepares you for sleep before going to bed, whether it's taking a hot shower or reading a book for a while.
The power of the ritual (or "pre-game routines" as I call it) comes from giving you a way to start a job without keeping your head busy. Your habits make it easier to start what you put in your mind and therefore continue to do so.
However, there is something to be aware of at this point. Of course, not every behavior that is repeated frequently is a ritual. The key to a good ritual comes from removing the need to make decisions: What should I do first? When should I do it? How should I do this? Most people can't take action because they can't decide how to start. Getting a behavior easy and automatic will give you the strength to get the job done when things get tough.
How do I get motivation into a habit?
Of course, there are techniques you can apply to create good rituals and put them in your life. There are three steps you can take to make motivation a habit.
Step 1: It is so easy that you don't bother to do a good ritual. You shouldn't need motivation to start this routine, you shouldn't force you, you shouldn't waste time thinking. For example, I start writing with a glass of water. My sports routine is to wear my sneakers. These are so simple things that I don't even think to say "no".
We have already said that the most important part of any job is to start work. Even though you may not be motivated before you start, start that job reluctantly, and you will see that the motivation comes after starting the job. That's why rituals should be very simple.
Step 2: Your routine should lead you to its goal.
Lack of motivation is often due to lack of action. I'm not kidding, your productivity is just as low when you don't move physically. When you are bored and depressed, think about the state of your body. You do not move much, maybe even spend hours on the sofa.
The opposite is possible, of course. If you are physically active, you may feel more energetic. It is almost impossible not to feel awake and well while dancing, for example.
In addition to being as easy as possible, your routine should gradually turn into something with more physical activity. You will find that your mind and motivation follow your physical activity over time. Of course, physical activity doesn't just have to be exercise. For example, if your goal is to sit at the table at the end of the day and write that article, your routine should bring you one step closer to this goal.
3rd step: You have to follow the same pattern each time.
The only goal of having a routine is to have a series of activities that you will do before starting a particular job. Rituals will start to signal your brain that it is time to do work for a while, and you will be sitting at that table by yourself.
Routines and rituals should be the things that give you the strength you need even on the days when your motivation is low, they enable you to get started, to produce something as the deadline approaches.
By paying attention to these steps, you should create certain routines for yourself and turn these routines into a habit for you over time. This is very important because it is very difficult to decide what to do when you are not motivated. Let's say you overcome the first obstacle and reach a decision. When you get to the stage of making a decision again, it is very likely that you will give up. Routines and rituals solve this problem radically because you know what to do. By eliminating that process, it allows you to take action without any discussion or decision-making action. At this point, it doesn't matter if it's a lack of motivation. As we explained before, because you follow a program, your motivation comes naturally when you start working.
